Mine on Monday: Happy Mother’s Day! | Sonoma Newborn Photography

Monday, May 14th, 2012

I had one request this Mother’s Day – that my children let me take them out for some portraits with ME! We headed to a beautiful spot in Sonoma and had a blast!  Like many photographers (and probably moms in general), I all too often am the one behind the camera and end up not capturing the fact that I’m also a very real part of my children’s lives.  I’d like to say that my kids were tripping over themselves to pose for me but they’re pretty done with being in front of the camera.  I begged and pleaded to have just this one day and in the end, they gave me what I so desperately wanted – and needed!  So here I am, world, with my four beautiful kiddos in gorgeous Sonoma, California!  I really feel so lucky to live in the area I do.  It’s just so beautiful out here!

I live in this really cool patch of Sonoma County where suburbs meet historic Victorian (actual Victorian) homes with a quaint downtown, all surrounded by farmland, hiking, hills, the ocean just a stones throw away and easy access to the “big city” of San Francisco.  I love it here.  Really, really love it.  A short walk from my home is this amazingly cool dog park.  It’s acres of hilly land in which the dogs have the freedom to be off leash and romp around with each other, the way dogs should.  I try to take my dogs, Echo (my very white, yellow lab) and Cooper (my stunningly gorgeous mutt) on a daily basis.  These past few days have been delightfully warm, and in true Petaluma style, the evening brings the welcome breeze from our river that winds through towns and the hills that surround us.  Sunset seemed like such a perfect time to go up with the kids.  Heck, I figured I’d even bring my camera and see what I could capture.  I ended up shooting the majority at the absolute limits of what my classic Canon 5D can handle – an ISO of 1600.  That’s okay though.  Grain can be good.  Embrace the grain.  Here are some favorites from this evening, in my effort to capture some of my own family’s moments, as well as yours.  Enjoy – and I’d love to hear your feedback!

Just arrived – Cooper makes a mad dash across the park to greet another dog in the distance.

Cooper and Echo reluctantly pose for me so I can try to get a photo of the two of them together as the sun (very rapidly) sets behind them.

My eldest daughter got new shoes today.  She was very excited about them an actually insisted I take these photos to document their “epic-ness” forever.  That’s right, I said it.  Epic.

My dear daughter, Caitlin – eleven years old yet still so, so young.  I love her.

The sun has set but the hunt for ladybugs is on.  My eight year old daughter, Ali, is the master hunter.  Don’t worry.  She set these guys free later.

This particular dog park is situated right beside a spectacular bird sanctuary wetlands area called Shollenberger Park in Petaluma.  It is not uncommon (more like impossible not to) to spot birds in the area.  Here I see a Red Winged Blackbird hanging out in the reeds.  I only have my 50mm lens on me so I can’t get too close, but I thought the shot was worth taking.

I capture this image of Ali walking and still searching for the elusive ladybug.

The sun has now officially set and it is dark.  Ali can’t help but pose in the grasses for me.  She’s the kind of kid every photographer dreams of – the kind who LIKES to be in front of the camera!  This moment I caught was actually unscripted – the kind I like best!

And now I’m pretty much begging the kids to let us go home, but they have one last shot in mind:

Isn’t it cool how dark blue the sky looks after dark?

And that’s it for this edition of Mine on Monday.  I promise to get a blog post or two up with some recent newborns this week.  I’ve been a busy girl and have much to share with you.  Here’s to another great week!

Monday, April 9th, 2012

Hi everyone! I’m back with a long overdue Mine on Monday blog post! In the last couple of weeks I’ve photographed a good bunch of beautiful newborn babies and look forward to sharing those images with you soon. The workshop I attended definitely pushed my skills to the next level and I couldn’t be happier. Everything is coming together so nicely! I can’t wait to photograph each of these San Francisco Bay Area newborns I’ve got lined up throughout the summer. It’s looking like June is THE month to be born this year!

Yesterday my family took our annual trek to Guinda where one of my dearest friend’s mother lives on one of the most stunning properties I’ve ever had the privilege to visit. It’s at this annual event that I get to see my childhood friend (who now resides with her husband and son in the Pacific Northwest) and my children get to really be kids – riding bikes, playing basketball (or as my son Finn calls it, “scoring hoops”), hunting for Easter eggs, playing with friends they only see once a year and just generally having a fantastic time.

A very rare and impromptu (note the lack of pleasing wardrobe choices and clean faces) family portrait (snapped for me by Justin Marx of Justin Marx Photography – he does amazing landscape work).

Thanks for looking! I’m on my way to Disneyland but I’ll be back next week with more newborn images to share with you all!

Is it another Monday already? This week I’m off in the beautiful Pacific Northwest taking a newborn workshop with one of my favorite newborn photographers!  More on that later.  Here’s a photo of my twin boys enjoying an early birthday gift my husband and I scored from them (used but in great condition) from a friend!  They are LOVING it!

When I get back in to the Bay Area I’ll have loads of newborn photos to share with you all!  Can’t wait!

p.s. I miss my kids!

This is Roan.  He is almost 6 years old.

Roan decided he didn’t care for his haircut.  It got in his eyes.  So he cut it himself.

Will he do something like this again? {{{SIGH}}} You can bet he will!

Mine on Monday | San Francisco, Here We Come!

Monday, February 27th, 2012

This past week my kids had the week off school and my hubby took some time off of work.  It was a really nice break, overall.  Relaxing.  One thing I was determined to do was to take them all down into San Francisco so we could play tourist for the day.  Growing up in the Bay Area, I, like so many others, never really take the time to see the sights.  San Francisco is a great city – lots of fun to be had – but honestly it tends to be underutilized by those who’ve always lived here.  So on this day we took the time to see the sites.  The kids thought it was almost as fun as Disneyland!  The only thing we didn’t get to do this time around that everyone really wanted to do was to take the ferry to Alcatraz (never done it!).  Maybe next time!

We started out in Union Square and after a quick lunch, took one of the world famous Cable Cars all the way down the line to the Hyde Street Pier location.

San Francisco Cable Car Ride

Once at Hyde Street Pier, we boarded the ships they had docked and on display.  I quickly learned that in my old age, I’ve become extremely sensitive to movement (yeah, the minor sway of a large docked ship had me turning pale and green – yuck!).  The kids loved it though! You can see Coit Tower and the Transamerica Pyramid in the distant skyline as seen from one of the ships.

Aboard ships at Hyde St Pier

Next we headed down to the beach in front of the docked ships.  I wish we had more time to stay and play.  It was such an incredibly warm and beautiful February day in the city!

San Francisco beach time

Finn had fun drawing pictures of Mommy (and his name) in the sand.

Next stop – a short walk to Ghirardelli Square, where no trip is complete without some ice cream from the famous factory itself!

Ice Cream at Ghirardelli Square

Perhaps the MOST fun of the entire outing was when we got lured into a Street Performer’s magic show.  The kids were just dying with laughter! Of course, our little Ali is quite the funny girl herself.  I think she made the performer laugh about as hard as he made her laugh! He finished up his act by swallowing a sword which I then had to pull out of his throat.  So gross!  My husband thought this was hilarious and video taped the whole thing.  I’m sure it will surface on YouTube for the purpose of embarrassing me eventually.  My eldest daughter, Caitlin, didn’t want to get pulled into the action so she’s trying to hide off to the left behind a street lamp.  Look at her!  I think she was crying from laughing so hard!  So funny!

It was starting to get late and cold but we still had plenty to do.  Ali gave her little brother Roan a ride on her back as we walked down the the Wax Museum (which I wouldn’t recommend except for easily impressed children).

San Francisco Wax Museum

We then walked down to Pier 39 to see the famous sea lions, a nice evening view of Alcatraz and it’s lighthouse, and the sites and shops of the Pier itself.

And finally, we finished off the night with dinner at the Rainforest Cafe – always a favorite of my kids’.  It was a great day!  See you next week with another Mine on Monday and don’t miss my upcoming newborn post in the next few days!

Happy President’s Day!  I’m really looking forward to this week because not only do my kids have the entire week off, so does my husband, so hopefully we’ll get out of the house a bit and have some fun.  I’ve already squeezed in some prop shopping at a couple of antique stores today and found some fabulous new items to use with my upcoming newborn babies!  Can’t wait!

Here is my image for the week – my kids having their weekly movie night (well, movie day, in this instance).  The dogs – Echo, our yellow lab and Cooper, our Rottweiler-Boxer-Collie-Pug (?) mix – are getting in on the snugly action too.  These are the moments in life that make my heart sing!

Yikes! Monday is almost over and I just realized I hadn’t posted my entry for the day yet!  The past 2 Mondays were skipped due to the giveaway I was running but it’s time to get back on track!  So here is my entry for Mine on Monday!

Here’s my son Roan with a very curious (and nippy) pony from the property I volunteer at:

Is it Monday already?!?!  So one of the things my kids just love doing is dancing like crazy people in the living room listening to a mix of songs on my iPhone.  The classic 90′s hit, Ice Ice Baby was on and they were doing their thing.  Next thing I know, my little Roan (5 years old) shows up in my room all decked out in his “hip hop” attire and strikes a pose.  I laughed so hard! If you had any idea how unexpected something like this was from one of my (extremely media sheltered, Waldorf schooled) kids, you’d get why I thought it was so funny.  I have no idea where he got this but he nailed the look!

This week on Mine on Monday, I took some time to photographer the kids just being kids! Here they are up at Big Dog Rescue in Penngrove, where I volunteer my photography services, swinging on the rope swing.  I don’t know that there’s anything they love doing more, to be honest!
