Capturing Innocence | Petaluma Baby Photographer

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

When Mateo’s mom called me, she wanted something really special – photos of him that captured his babyhood since he didn’t have photos taken as a newborn.  At 17 months old, this was a challenge but in the end we got some photos that I hope his mama will cherish for a lifetime.  We started out in the studio with the specific aim of getting these “baby” shots and then moved to one of my favorite outdoor locations for a bit more spontaneous beauty.

Ah, Mother and Child – does it get any better than this?

Now for the outdoor fun!  Mateo loves his lion.  We tried to get him to hold it for his studio images, but he wasn’t into it at the time.  This is so much better…

I just love this image.  Like, LOVE.  I get that this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea due to the extreme sunflare I’ve got going on, but to me it’s pure, shining beauty.  Look at their faces.  See the love, the joy?  It’s a beautiful moment in time.

And on to the creek to finish up!  What little boy doesn’t love splashing around in the water.  Shoes did not deter him from jumping right in!

Thanks for looking!  Comments are always very much appreciated!

Cake Smash: First Birthday Fun! | San Rafael Baby Photographer

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Is there anything better than a cake smash session?  Heck no!  What exactly is a cake smash, you might ask?  Well, for that very special time when a little guy or girl is hitting that huge milestone of one year old, I like to do a very special session with them which is known as a cake smash session.  It’s simple really.  You get a cute cake, adorable kiddo, setup you studio space – being sure to get a photo of the cake before it’s too late – and then you let the little one have at it!  Meanwhile, I capture each moment being careful not to miss any of the cuteness!  It’s so much fun to watch the baby have his or her first taste of cake – quite often the baby’s first sweets at all, as was the case with this little one!  The expressions are just priceless.  Cake smash photos make for fabulous birthday party invitations, which I can create and have printed for you!

I first met Roman as a newborn.  He’s been my biggest newborn to date, having been born weighing a whopping 10 pounds and 15 ounces!  There is nothing cuter than a chubby baby!  Here he was back then…

The cutest 11 pound baby ever

Can you believe those cheeks?  And those lips? {{{SWOON}}}

And here he is having a blast with that cake!

I think the best way to display images from a cake smash session is in a collage such as this, typically printed at 20×20″ on canvas.  What a cute piece of art for your little one’s room!

Now let’s take a look at sweet Mr. Roman a bit closer up!

That last image – like “What? I didn’t eat it!” cracks me up every time!

Laura: 6 Weeks Old | Marin Infant Photography

Friday, August 26th, 2011

At 6 weeks old, Laura was a bit outside of my newborn comfort zone but her mom and I decided to go for it anyway.  The results – stunning images of this beautiful, little girl!  I’m so happy that we went ahead with the session!  Here’s one thing I can say about older “newborns” – they’re more awake and alert.  While this can be quite difficult when you’re going for those fast asleep poses, it’s a blessing when you get them gazing at you with their big, bright eyes!  Some of my very favorite images are of her wide awake…

But as much as I love these – and I do really love them – I also adore a sweet, sleeping baby!  Perhaps it’s because I’m a mom of four and can appreciate those quiet moments!

Oh the eyelashes!  How is it that newborns can have such incredible lashes!  I met up with Laura again this afternoon and they were even longer, more curled and lovelier than here, if that’s even possible!

Let’s not forget those newborn lips – to die for!

And last but not least, my most requested pose (aka “The Pose”).  Please note that if you plan to try this yourself, this shot is actually a composite of (in this particular case) three different photos and is done with the baby’s head supported at all times.  Please be safe!

A big thank you goes out to my dear friend Jamie for knitting this hat up for me at the last minute!  If you’re in search of something beautiful and would like to be put in touch with her, let me know!  Please check out my Facebook page for more recent photos and as always, feel free to leave some love in the comments section below!  XOXO

Happy Birthday, J! | Oakland California Baby Photographer

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

I was so excited a couple of months ago when I was contacted by a former client asking if I’d photograph her baby boy for his first birthday.  This particular baby had been my very first newborn of 2010 so I was very happy and honored to be asked to photograph him again!  He’d grown into quite a handsome little guy since I’d seen him last and was a lot of fun to work with.  His parents are just great – a really sweet and beautiful family!  Here are some peeks from their session.

A Look Back | North Bay Newborn Baby Child Family Photographer

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Well, I made it!  2010 marked the year that I officially put myself out there as a photographer, approached perfect strangers for photo sessions, began building a portfolio and eventually – on October 1st of this year – officially launched J. Dunham Photography!

I have to say, I’m proud of myself!  It isn’t easy to put yourself via your work – your passion – out there for all to see.  To judge, really!  I can honestly say that at the very beginning of the year I was not comfortable calling myself a photographer.  I would say, “I do photography” and leave it at that.  Now I embrace the title and I own it.  Sure, I’m still learning but I always will be – it wouldn’t be fun if I ever were to feel like I knew it all!  I’ve met some amazing people along the way – fellow photographers who support, push and encourage – and clients who inspire me with the love and emotion that comes through when I photograph them.
I thought it would be fun to take a look back through the year.  I’ve been lucky to have had many sessions – too many to share here – so I will attempt to narrow it down to just my absolute favorites.  This isn’t easy!

Subject: Family; Look requested: Artistic; Why I love it: It’s got a bit of everything – cool sunflare, interesting perspective thanks to the wide angle lens, awesome location and gorgeous subjects.

Subject: Baby; Look requested: I don’t recall a specific look but this mom was fun and had all sorts of clothing choices and ideas – I love clients like that!; Why I love it: I think it’s a great composition, a fun setup with the props and clothing, but mostly I love it because I could not have posed the baby with her finger to her mouth like that if I tried.  Spontaneous movements like that are the best!

Subject: Maternity; Look requested: Client left it up to me; Why I love it: Again, I’ve got a gorgeous client and location here but I love it because of that look on her face.  Joy.  Pure joy!  She’s pending the arrival of her new baby and she’s already in love.  I feel this photo conveys that and that’s why I love it.

Subject: Newborn; Look requested: They were up for anything and we truly did it all in this session; Why I love it: How could I not?  Look at this kid!  Born just shy of eleven pounds, he’s just the most adorable little chunkster I may have ever seen!  I love it because of his pose and expression.  I can’t help but look at that sweet face and wonder what he’s thinking?  Thank goodness for heavy sleepers!

Subject: Child; Look requested: Anything; Why I love it: You know, this is one of those images where I’m not sure if others like it or not but I simply love it.  I’m not heavy handed with the tilt style but I did it for this shot because it felt right.  She was moving and it added to her free flow of movement, I thought.  She’s like a little girl in the city, ready to meet the world!  Reminds me of the last scene of the opening credits of the Mary Tyler Moore Show!

Subject: Family; Look requested: I was asked to try to get sunset shots as a part of the session; Why I love it: Well, I love the silhouette here and the deep blue sky, orange of the setting sun and little bit of sunflare peeking at the child’s waist.  But mostly I love this shot because of the kiss between mother and daughter – priceless!

Subject: Mother & Daughter; Look requested: Artistic black and white as a Father’s Day gift; Why I love it: Number one, I love the eye contact I got from the little girl.  Priceless.  But more than that, this was such a tiny moment in time between mother and daughter that can never be recreated.  I was honored to have been asked to capture it.  The entire shoot was for the purpose of this one look and we got it!

Subject: Newborn; Look requested: Classic newborn; Why I love it: This is a classic pose that many a newborn photographer do but it doesn’t always pan out.  In this case, I think it’s just perfect: baby positioned lovingly in his mother’s hands showing off how tiny he once was, the first hairs on his head, his toes peeping up from the background.  Focus fell right where I wanted and I loved the shallow depth of field on this one.  Perhaps it’s the simplicity of the shot that really draws me in.

Subject: Baby; Look requested: Any – I did ask if I could take some of the mother with her son and this image comes from that; Why I love it: Again, it’s all about emotion.  Here we have a beautiful young mom but what’s more is her love for her son.  It just shines through!  I’m also fond of the angle – how we can see both of their faces – and the playfulness between them.

Subject: Child; Look requested: Well, this is my child and I was going for a concept shoot – the idea was of a little girl running away.  There are others from the series but this is the one I chose to display; Why I love it: I adore the color of the metal on the old rusted train car and the look on my daughter’s face as she gazes out the window.  It’s as if she’s wondering if what lies ahead is better than what she’s leaving behind.  Or maybe I just have mommy goggles!  You decide!

Thank you to everyone who shared in this year with me!  I can’t wait to get to work in 2011 and really establish myself as the North Bay’s premier newborn (and more) photographer!

Family | Petaluma Child & Family Photographer

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

There’s something really special about being asked to capture a family in a photograph.  Sometimes everything comes real easy, other times you work harder for it.  In this case, I felt that the family was able to relax right into the session and just let their personalities come forth, which is exactly, as a photographer, what I hope to see!  After all, everyone simply staring at the camera and saying “cheese” says very little about who these people are on a daily basis.  I hope these images convey who they are as well as the love they share.  Here’s your sneak peek!

A Day of Firsts | Petaluma Baby Photographer

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Today represents several firsts:  First blog post, first cake smash session and first birthday for this cute little guy!  Let me tell you, I wasn’t quite sure how this would all go down, how he’d react to the balloons (always a nightmare with my kids – they just get SO excited!) and the cake.  As it turned out, he was more interested in drawing with the icing than eating the cake, but here you have it – one cake smash coming right up!
